Cairo is loud, warm, ancient and endlessly alive. It is one of Africa's largest cities and one of the most rewarding places you will ever visit. Here is how to arrive smoothly and make the most of your first days.
Arriving at Cairo International Airport
- Follow signs to passport control.
- Receive your QR visa on arrival — USD 36 (USD 30 visa fee + USD 6 service charge). Read the full visa guide.
- Clear immigration and collect your bags.
- Meet your driver in arrivals if you booked airport pickup.
SIM cards and internet
Mobile operators have counters in the arrivals area. Bring your passport — it is required to register a SIM. A local data plan makes maps, ride-hailing and WhatsApp easy.
Money
Egypt's currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP). Cards are accepted in hotels, malls and larger restaurants, but carry cash for taxis, markets and tips. Use bank ATMs or official exchange offices.
Getting around
- Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem operate in Cairo and show prices upfront.
- Cairo Metro is cheap and fast for central routes.
- For day trips to Giza, Saqqara or Alexandria, a private driver is most comfortable.
Where to stay
- Giza — pyramid views, close to the Grand Egyptian Museum
- Zamalek — leafy island neighborhood on the Nile
- Downtown — central, historic and close to Tahrir Square
- New Cairo / Heliopolis — modern and closer to the airport
Must-see sights
- The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx
